Toy figures in puffer parkas and goggles on a sunlit Greenland snowfield beneath jagged white mountains. A blue-violet star in a beanie and mask points, asking "Should we tell him?"; an amber sunburst holds up a tablet showing a globe, saying "Wrong end of the planet."; a huge laughing wrestler shouts "EMBRACE THE PENGUIN!"; a punk woman with a teal streak folds her arms; a chickadee in spectacles peers at the nearest penguin and says "Don't look at me. I just got here." An iridescent bubble-headed figure watches from a rock above. Beside them a long line of penguins in stars-and-stripes sweaters and bobble hats waves small American flags, the first trailing an enormous scarf and asking "Which way to Antarctica?" A wooden sign reads GREENLAND, and far off by a Greenlandic flag a toy Trump in a dark overcoat stands with his back turned.

His Hemisphere

Greenland has no penguins. Nobody has told the penguins.

Twice this year, a picture of Trump in Greenland has come with penguins. Penguins live in the other hemisphere.

  1. Friday, January 23. The White House: "Embrace the penguin."

Under a dark, cloudy sky, Trump in a long black coat walks away from the viewer across a flat snowfield toward jagged snow-covered mountains, beside a penguin holding an American flag on a pole. A red and white Greenlandic flag flies on a pole on the slope ahead. Two lines of footprints, his and the penguin's, trail back toward the viewer. A small White House logo sits in the bottom-left corner.Posted by the White Houseapologies for the quality
  2. An hour later. @PatriotTakes replies: "There are no penguins in Greenland. All Penguins live in the southern hemisphere except one species from the Galapagos Islands. Perhaps you shouldn't have dismantled the Department of Education so quickly."

  3. Sunday, September 27, 9:33pm Eastern. Trump posts himself peering over a globe turned to the top of the world, Greenland in the middle of it.

"His Hemisphere" in large crimson letters across the top. Below, a black-and-white close-up of Trump's face, eyes narrowed, peering over the top of a desk globe turned to show the Arctic Ocean and Greenland, against pale red rings.Posted by Trumpapologies for the quality
  4. Sunday, October 4, 1:06pm Eastern. Trump posts himself rising over Greenland's mountains, holding on to the ridge above a village.

"Hello, Greenland!" in large dark-green letters across the top. Below, a giant Trump rises from behind a mountain range, his fingers gripping the ridge, looking down over a village of red, blue, green and yellow wooden houses under a bright blue sky.Posted by Trumpapologies for the quality
  5. Same day, 1:50pm Eastern. Trump posts the penguins, one of more than two dozen posts he made that Sunday (The Independent).

GREENLAND in large dark-green capitals across the top. Below, Trump in a dark overcoat stands with his back to the viewer at the foot of a snow-capped mountain, facing a column of penguins marching across the snow, each in a red, white and blue knit sweater with stars and stripes and a matching bobble hat. The nearest penguin, and one further back, hold small American flags.Posted by Trumpapologies for the quality

Greenland has no native penguins. The only wild penguin north of the equator is the Galápagos penguin, which The Independent puts about 4,900 miles away (The Independent).

Toy figures judge two paintings on gold easels in a bright marble gallery. On the left, a smeary, muddy painting of lumpy penguins in flag sweaters under a blotchy GREENLAND, with a 1/10 card on the frame; a chickadee in spectacles inspects it through a magnifying glass from a velvet stool, saying "Wrong hemisphere AND wrong number of toes." A punk woman with a teal streak photographs it on her phone, and a blue-violet star in a beanie and striped jersey points at it, asking "Who prompted this, a penguin?" On the right, a crisp, bright painting of the gang in parkas beside a line of penguins in the snow wears a gold rosette. An iridescent bubble-headed figure in a black turtleneck holds a clipboard: "Composition: Arctic. Penguins: Antarctic. Score: one." An amber sunburst presents the good painting: "Ours took one try." A huge wrestler doubles over laughing: "EMBRACE THE PENGUIN!"
